I am going with my friends to the World Cup in South Africa this summer. We are planning to stay the week in Johannesburg and do a 2-day trip to Cape Town. Which area of the country is better for safaris?

In Jo’burg you’ll be closer to Kruger National Park (neither cities are really suitable to use as a base from which to Safari from.) Western Cape province has a larger number of parks but all of South Africa has a questionable quality on offer if you are looking for a genuine safari experience and not a trip to the zoo. If this is a once in a lifetime trip take some extra time to hit Botswana or Zambia. If not then I’d make do with visiting some of the smaller reserves around Cape Town

Soweto is not as feral as it used to be so you will probably be better offf in Khayalitsha.

Trans Frontier Trails was a great outfit in think the province called the Transfrontiers’ Walking Safaris http://www.transfrontiers.com/index.php/about/ The will take you to their walking Safari, Normal truck and Night Truck Safari. The walking was the best part, this trip as seeing lion having lunch on food was the best. I think it around 400 km’s from Johannesburg and they offered pick up when I lived in South Africa.

lol B O, brilliant! But back to the question. Both cities have small game parks not too far away that is easily accessible.

  6. JC Says:

Neither. Especially if you want to see the Big 5. There are some parks around both, but I would not recommend any of them, since I’ve been there.
The best safari places are in Limpopo and North West provinces.

Pilanesberg National Park (2 hours from Jo’burg) is great and Sun City is right next to it. Kruger is about 3 to 4 hrs drive from Jhb (depending on how often you stop) and is also great.
You can also fly to both these parks from Lanseria Airport, just 30 minutes drive from Jhb Central/ western suburbs.

Go straight to Kruger National Park for Big 5 safaris. Johannesburg closer

The area nort of johannesburg. Its winter then in SA the wheather is really bad in capetown. Warmer in the north.

Both these are cities, so the only safari you will encounter there is avoiding the crime! LOL

Kruger is closest to Johannesburg and where most visitors will head for.
Personally I will not be visiting anywhere there during the World Cup :-)
