The Highlights tour: one hour, all four spaces

The R150 Highlights tour is the venue's own compromise: it touches all four spaces — Number Four, the Women's Gaol, the Old Fort rampart and the Constitutional Court — in a single guided hour, departing hourly from 09:00 with the last tour at 16:00. Nothing is skipped so much as compressed: the cells are walked rather than read, and the court's art collection gets the driver-past version. It is the right ticket when the hill is one stop of a bigger day, which for most visitors to Johannesburg it is.

Buy it at the desk from 08:45 or online for the 5% discount, and arrive twenty minutes early — the tours leave from the Visitor Centre, not the gate.

The Full Site tour: the two hours most first visits deserve

At R200 the Full Site tour is the same route with the pauses restored: two hours, once at 10:00 and once at 13:00 daily, with the exhibitions' personal testimonies from prisoners and warders given time to play and questions taken between blocks. The difference is the difference between seeing the Tauza courtyard and standing in it while the guide explains what it was for. If your morning or early afternoon is free and the calendar shows both slots, this is the ticket the site's own guides would sell you — the price gap to the Highlights tour is the cost of one coffee at the end, and the tour is twice as long.

The special programmes: Night, Curated, Time Travel

Above the two standard tours sits a shelf of programmes for the repeat or the occasion visitor: the Night tour (R390) runs three hours on the last Thursday of each month; the Curated themed tours (R500) follow single threads with specialist guides; and Time Travel (R660) pairs the three-hour tour with food and drinks on the last Friday of the month. All of them require groups of 10 or more to run, which is the quiet reason they vanish from the calendar — a visitor travelling solo books them only when a date is already confirmed. Private Full tours (R250) are the reliable version of the same idea for families, booked to your own group at your own pace.

Concession pricing runs on three lines — children, students and pensioners pay the same reduced rate — and the free list is short and exact. The figures are the venue's published schedule, dollar figures at $1 = R16.30.

Two family rules sit outside the price grid. Children under 12 must be accompanied by someone aged 17 or older, so a teenage babysitter solution does not work on the hill. And the family ticket covers 2 adults + 4 children — for the average two-plus-two family the standard four tickets already cost less than the family product at Highlights level, so price both before you click.

The free-entry public holidays are genuine bargains and genuinely packed: 16 December and 27 April fill the Braamfontein hill with school groups by mid-morning, and the free things to do list has the rest of the city's costless days if your dates are flexible.

Constitution Hill does not require individuals to book ahead. The Visitor Centre opens for ticket sales at 08:45, fifteen minutes before the site gates at 09:00, and sells until 16:00, which is also the last Highlights departure. You buy, you wait in the centre (free Wi-Fi, and the site is entirely cashless, so find your card before the desk, not at it), and you leave with the next tour. Groups of 20 or more are the exception: they reserve a time slot ahead, and a walk-in group that size can be refused on a busy day.

The online route runs through Webtickets, the venue's own selling page, and it is 5% cheaper per ticket — which makes it the rare Johannesburg attraction where buying ahead saves money rather than costing a fee. The trades are rigidity and connection: an online ticket is dated to a tour time, and the venue's telephone line (011 381 3100, weekdays 08:00–17:00) exists mostly for the changes the site itself will not make. On weekends, when the timed slots sell out, the online calendar is also the only place that shows you a slot is gone before you drive to Braamfontein.

Official Constitution Hill tickets are non-refundable. The one lever is the date change: a ticket's date can be moved in advance for a fee, arranged by phone on 011 381 3100 between 08:00 and 17:00 on weekdays — which matters most in December, when the calendar itself moves under you. The site closes at 13:00 on 24 and 31 December 2026 and shuts entirely on 25–26 December 2026 and 1 January 2027; a ticket bought for an afternoon that no longer exists gets the phone call, not a refund.

The cards on this page are the hedge: both cancel free up to 24 hours before, which is the whole reason a traveller with unsettled plans pays their premium. The ticket desk is inside the Visitor Centre at 11 Kotze Street, Braamfontein, GPS −26.190217, 28.041916. Drivers should not navigate to Kotze Street itself: the secure underground parking runs off Joubert Street, between Sam Hancock Street and Kotze, on levels C and D at a small fee, and its lifts come up into the centre. The City Sightseeing Red Bus stops at the hill (stop 5 on the loop), and a same-day Red Bus receipt takes 25% off entry — the one discount that stacks with the venue's own prices.

On safety: the precinct is secured and staffed, and the ticket-tour flow keeps you inside the fence from the centre to the court. The seam to respect is the one the hill sits on — Braamfontein runs downhill and busy on one side, Hillbrow starts two blocks north on the other.
