The Monday rule

Monday is the day that organises everything. The Apartheid Museum closes every Monday, and so do the Sterkfontein Caves out in the Cradle — the two close together, so neither rescues the other. Constitution Hill opens 09:00–17:00 every day of the year except Christmas, and its full tour schedule runs on Mondays exactly as on Saturdays, which is why it is the standard Monday substitution.

Mandela House opens daily outside its published holiday list, the Hector Pieterson Memorial publishes no hours for any day, and the Wits Art Museum keeps Tuesday-to-Saturday hours like a gallery rather than a museum. Gold Reef City, next door to the Apartheid Museum, is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays too, so an Ormonde Monday is a double dead end — point the day at Braamfontein instead, or take the guided Constitution Hill tour and add the ridge on foot.

Three pairings that work

The history core compresses into two natural pairs. Pair one is Ormonde with Soweto: the Apartheid Museum at 09:00 opening, out by 11:30, then the 15-minute drive west to Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial for the afternoon — the half-day museum and Soweto tour is exactly this shape with a driver, and our Apartheid Museum or Constitution Hill post argues the one-museum version. Pair two is the Braamfontein ridge: Constitution Hill's Full Site tour at 10:00, then the short walk down to the Wits Art Museum for a free hour before lunch — no car needed between them.

The third pairing is a half-day out: Sterkfontein's 10:00 cave tour paired with the Cradle's wider human-origins day, which never combines with the other two because of the distance and that shared Monday closure.

The Wits Art Museum holds the University of the Witwatersrand's collection of African art — contemporary painting and sculpture alongside masks, carvings and beadwork from across the continent — in a purpose-built glass-fronted building at the corner of Jorissen and Bertha Streets in Braamfontein. Admission is free, Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–16:00, closed public holidays. In practice it works as the release valve of a Braamfontein day: the Full Site tour at Constitution Hill ends around midday, and the walk down to the museum takes minutes, so the morning's heaviest history is followed by the lightest hour on the list at no cost.

It is also the answer to the family question — under-11s are the exact group the Apartheid Museum advises against bringing, and nobody advises that here.

Driving and the red bus

Distances are car distances: Sandton to Ormonde or Soweto runs 30–40 minutes in normal traffic, longer at Friday peak, and parking exists at all three clusters (the Gold Reef City complex absorbs the Apartheid Museum's overflow). The City Sightseeing red bus is the car-free answer — its loop stops at Constitution Hill, the mining district, the Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City gates, with a ticket-office discount at the museum on presentation of a bus receipt, and Soweto's two museums reach the loop via its extension. Keep the receipt if you ride it.

Between Constitution Hill and the Wits Art Museum, walk: it is a few minutes down Jorissen Street and the ridge is the one place on this page designed for it.

Cash, phones and the grid

Two of the six museums are cashless — Constitution Hill and Mandela House both refuse cash at the desk, so a card is not optional. Phone ahead for the two venues that publish nothing: Mandela House on 087 265 2252 and the Hector Pieterson Memorial on 011 536 0611. On load-shedding, the practical picture has been stable — Eskom reported nearly five hundred consecutive days without national cuts by late in the year — but scheduled 'load reduction' still touches pockets of Gauteng, so a museum whose doors or ticketing depend on power can still open late; the operators' phone numbers above are the check.

And the standing safety note: the FCDO advises against walking after dark anywhere in the city, so schedule Vilakazi and Khumalo Streets for daylight, and take a guided Soweto walk rather than drifting alone — the walking tour with a local guide is the museum-day continuation most visitors actually book.

The Soweto pair, on foot

Mandela House and the Hector Pieterson Memorial sit a few minutes' walk apart in Orlando West, which is why they are almost always visited in one Soweto half-day. The block between them is the memorial landscape itself — the uprising route runs along Vilakazi and Khumalo Streets — so the walk is content, not transfer.
