Crown Mines and Shaft No 14, opened 1897

Gold was struck on the Witwatersrand in 1886 and the reef under today's southern Johannesburg turned the camp into the largest inland city in Africa. Crown Mines became the biggest of the mining houses working that ground, and Gold Reef Shaft No 14 — the shaft the park tour uses — was sunk in 1897, within eleven years of the first strike. The mine stopped production in 1971, and the theme park opened on its workings in 1987, keeping the headgear, the offices and the manager's houses standing around the rides.

When you stand under the headframe, you are looking at working infrastructure, not a replica.

The same precinct as the Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum stands in the same Ormonde precinct, a few minutes' walk from the theme park gate, on ground the mining company donated when the park went in. That adjacency is the practical point: the two visits share one drive from the city, one parking decision and, on the red city bus loop, one stop. The museum closes Mondays while the park closes Mondays and Tuesdays, so a Tuesday is the one day the pairing fails — the museum's own page carries its hours and its 2026 price schedule.

What actually happens down there

You go down the shaft in a caged lift to 75 metres below the surface, walk the underground museum with a guide, and see where the reef was worked and how the rock was broken and brought up. The tour finishes on the surface with a live gold pour — molten gold poured into a mould, which is the photograph everyone comes home with. Above ground the ticket also covers the museum houses and the railway displays, so even the mine-tour-only ticket at $9.20 (R150) takes about two hours to do properly.

Who is not allowed underground

Children under 4 are not permitted on the tour at all, and children aged 4 to 6 must walk the route unassisted with an adult over 18 — no carrying. The operator also excludes expectant mothers and anyone with heart conditions, asthma, high or low blood pressure, recent major surgery, claustrophobia or prosthetic limbs, and the reason is printed plainly: if the lift fails, the evacuation route is more than 150 steps up a 38-degree incline. The last tour begins at 16:00, the same hour the gates close, so an afternoon arrival can mean a shaft-less visit — put the mine tour first in your plan, not last.

Three period houses and a railway shed

The Oosthuizen, Olthaver and Dowse houses are Victorian wood-and-iron homes furnished as a mining-town family, a bachelor overseer and a well-off manager would have lived around 1900, and they survive from the Crown Mines days rather than being built for the park. Next to them, the Train Museum holds a working steam locomotive — a Class 19D — and the Bullion Coach, the armoured carriage that moved gold bars from the mine to the bank between 1911 and 1967, which is the single best object on the property for explaining what this ground actually produced. Gold panning runs beside the village, though it was among the attractions flagged temporarily closed at our check.

The rides floor, honestly counted

Six of the roller coasters on the property make it the biggest coaster collection on the continent, and the Anaconda — the suspended coaster that swings riders out over the park's paths — is the one the enthusiasts ride twice. The kids' floor is unusually deep for a park this size: 20 kids rides plus Jump City give under-8s a full day on their own, which is why the park anchors most Johannesburg-with-kids plans. Under-12s need adult supervision in the park, and a parent rides the family coasters with them — buying a child's ticket does not put a six-year-old on the Anaconda alone.

Seven rides were flagged closed at our check

At the time we read the operator's ride-status board, the Barrel Roll, Safari Train, Shongololo, Golden Wave, Miner's Revenge, Giant Wheel and Gold Panning were all listed as temporarily closed. That list will have changed by the time you read this — mechanical status changes weekly — but it teaches the real lesson: the terms give no refunds and no rain checks for closed rides or weather, and availability is confirmed only on the day. If your visit exists because of one specific coaster, look at the status board on the morning you buy, not the night before.

Do the mine tour in your first two hours. Tours run through the day but the last one begins at 16:00, and a ride-first strategy risks arriving at the shaft queue as the afternoon thunderstorms roll in from October to April.

The Wed–Sun against Thu–Sun contradiction, stated plainly

The operator's own page states its hours two ways: the header says Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00, while the terms and conditions a scroll lower say standard trading days are Thursday to Sunday plus public holidays. Both versions agree the park is closed Mondays and Tuesdays and on Christmas Day, and both agree on the 16:00 gate close. We print the contradiction rather than pick a side because which Wednesday dates run depends on the week and the school-holiday calendar — the booking webstore is the only source that resolves it, and it shows your date before you pay.

Driving, bussing, and where to leave the car

From the CBD take the M1 South to the Booysens Road off-ramp and follow the brown signage; from Soweto the N12 puts you there in about 15 minutes. Without a car, the red City Sightseeing bus loop stops at Gold Reef City — the 1-day ticket is R375 ($23.00) for adults and R225 ($13.80) for juniors, with a Soweto extension departing from the park hourly in the afternoon — or the guided half-day with hotel pickup removes the driving question entirely.

Load-shedding can darken traffic lights on the approach roads; it affects the ride, not the park's ticketed hours, but leave earlier on a Stage 4-and-up day.
