Johannesburg Tickets: Every Official Price and What to Book

Johannesburg's official tickets are cheap by world-city standards and mostly walk-up, so buying official is the default: it is the cheapest route in, it funds the institutions, and two of the biggest names need no booking at all. The split below is how we book it, sight by sight.

The reseller markup buys the two things official prices never include: the car and the context. So the working strategy is what the table above already enables: pick two anchors, pay each official door price, and spend what a pass would have cost on the one thing Johannesburg actually charges for — the driving. A three-museum history day bought officially, museum by museum, costs less than a single big-city pass card elsewhere.

The walk-ups

The Apartheid Museum needs no booking and no time slot — door or Webtickets, with the door queue shortest after the school groups clear out at midday. Constitution Hill needs no booking for individuals either, though tickets bought online carry its 5% discount and are non-refundable once bought, with date changes for a fee; only groups of 20 or more must reserve. Mandela House sells at the door, cashless, and the Sterkfontein Caves sell on Webtickets or on site — with one seasonal catch: in school holidays, the operator asks visitors to phone ahead on the day, because each hourly cave tour caps around thirty people.

On the day-trip layer, the Hartbeespoort Cableway and the Walter Sisulu Garden both sell at the gate (both cashless), and the Walter Sisulu garden opens every day of the year.

The forced planners

Gold Reef City is the one hard rule in the city: theme-park tickets are sold online only, cancellations need at least 24 hours' written notice or they cost a R400 fee, and there are no refunds or rain checks — so check the park's opening-day calendar before building a day on it, because the park closes Mondays and Tuesdays and its own pages disagree on whether Wednesday belongs to the week. Sun City day tickets come only from TicketPro with a limited daily allocation, so buy those the week before, not at the dam.
