Two conclusions fall out of the table. Where a venue sells its own ticket and you have a car — the museum, Constitution Hill, Gold Reef City — the official ticket wins outright, and no listing resells a single door more cheaply than the door. Where the value is a guide or night transport, the platform is the only shop that sells it: Soweto has no unguided equivalent worth comparing, and the red bus is the one place the platforms undercut the operator.

Check the included line on any listing before you pay — the exclusion is usually the Soweto half of the day.

Mondays are the trap. The Apartheid Museum and the Sterkfontein Caves both close, and Gold Reef City closes Mondays and Tuesdays — its own page carries a contradiction, Wed–Sun in the header and Thu–Sun in the small print, so check the calendar before you build a day around it. What still runs on a Monday is not a consolation prize: Constitution Hill opens every day of the year but four, Soweto's streets and towers run daily, and the Lion & Safari Park opens every single day of the year, 08:00–17:00.

The UK foreign office's travel advice for South Africa is specific about townships: most violent crime happens in townships and informal settlements, and visitors should go only with a reliable guide. That sentence is the reason half this inventory exists, and it is not a marketing line — it is the difference between reading Vilakazi Street as a street and reading it as the story of forced removals that built it.

In practice the guided frame means three things. The tour keeps to daylight, or keeps to a vehicle — the night listing moves between stops by minibus, and the advice's other line, no walking around after dark, applies to locals too. The guide lives where the tour goes; the walking option's 4.91 rating across 823 reviews is mostly reviewers discovering what a resident notices. And the money stays partly local: a resident-run walking tour is a different economy from a bus that stops for photographs. The red bus, which undercuts its own operator

The red bus listing at $17.00–$18.50 is the City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off loop, not a guided tour: thirteen stops from Rosebank, recorded commentary, first departure 09:00 and the last full loop at 15:00, with a complimentary shuttle from Sandton hotels. It is the cheapest safe orientation a first day can buy — and, oddly, cheaper than the operator's own $23.0 (R375) gate price. The Soweto extension is the add-on worth taking; the base loop alone is transport with a voiceover.

The cableway ticket, where you do the driving

The Hartbeespoort cableway card at $32.17 is a return trip up the Magaliesberg ridge: no guide, no vehicle, and you arrange the drive yourself — the listing itself says the roughly ninety-minute drive is yours. Read its small print too, because it is sold as all sales final, no refunds, where nearly everything else on the platforms cancels free to 24 hours. A fine half-day if you have a car and a clear morning.
